I have learned so much that I actually use often in the classroom. Now, if I could get my laptop working again, I would like to continue enjoying my new skills :) I am currently observing early childhood classes (in GA I can teach pre-k through fifth!), working at After School Care, and looking for a teaching job. I will let you know more when I know more. Thank you for everything.Elysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16559841100671570333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-2353408022611858672008-05-03T10:11:00.001-04:002008-05-03T10:12:43.640-04:00Reflecting on this Year...This year has been great! I have learned so much about technology that I didn't know before. I have really enjoyed hearing about and seeing the student teachers using technology. It has shown me the endless possibilities technology has in the classroom! I have also enjoyed my experiences at Club 245. I enjoyed seeing the kids' reactions to Photoshop Elements and Visual Communicator. I'm excited for next year and the new projects we will be working on. I look forward to gaining more valuable experiences with technology in the classroom.Sarah Perryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07929289054232742257noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-64717883685681039562008-05-02T13:19:00.004-04:002008-05-02T13:28:29.866-04:00This Year in Clemson Geek SquadI have learned a lot this year while participating in this creative inquiry project. The opportunity to learn and work with the latest technology available for education was a great experience for me. Going out to Club 2:45 at Code Elementary was a valuable experience. This experience gave me the opportunity to not only work with children, but to work with fellow Clemson students in teams and to work with technology in the schools. I enjoyed this year as a Geek Squad member and I look forward to working with them again next year.

Tony WebbAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-27765110733457416322008-04-29T20:24:00.003-04:002008-04-29T20:27:34.997-04:00Reflection of The YearI really feel that I have learned a lot, had many helpful experiences, and am excited about doing more with Creative Inquiry next year. We went from going to Club 245 and observing and talking about technology to actually doing it. After learning the technology that I was using and collaborating with other students in the class, I felt very confident about going to Club 245 and leading a lesson! This year to me, was a year to pull everything together, and now that I feel like we have all of our ducks in the row--I can't wait to see what we will be able to accomplish!!Taylor Davishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16056935156688853475noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-28123520749390423132008-04-14T21:56:00.002-04:002008-12-10T14:13:13.294-05:00FoCI 2008Today, we presented our poster at FoCI 2008. I know I haven't been posting throughout this semester like I should have or would have liked. Hopefully, in this post I can touch on the many different ways I have been implementing technology in my first grade class and share just how successful it has been. First, I have to say the children are so intrigued by the little things you can do on the promethean board that it’s not hard to grab their attention and hold it. That is the best part, being able to hold their attention. In this generation, children have so many other cool gadgets and gizmos competing for their attention, it's getting harder and harder to impress them. Some of my favorite moments using technology in my classroom this semester were little instances where the children would gasp and “ooh-ahh” because I used the spotlight or reveal tool on a flipchart… again those little things. They’ve also been fascinated by my ability to make things appear and disappear “magically” by using the transparency element and the eraser to reveal answers on flipcharts. It’s hard to really portray just how the children are responding to my promethean board lessons through this blog post, so please feel free to stop by Clemson Elementary any day and check out my classroom. We use the promethean board everyday, some days more than others. My teacher and I don’t have a set schedule because something seems to come up everyday and we’ve found it best to be flexible. If you let me know ahead of time though, we can pencil in some technology for the time when you are able to come visit. I like to do a lot of math using the ProBoard, at least for an intro before messing around with manipulatives. Math is so easy to teach with the ProBoard because of all the resources available through the software like images of coins and interactive thermometers, etc. If you go to my website: http://BNRollings.googlepages.com you can check out some of the flipcharts I’ve been using in the classroom. Also, here are some pictures of other ways we have used the ProBoard.

I’ve used it often to take advantage of internet resources such as an online interactive map of the moon during our Unit: Finding the Moon. This particular activity was at the culmination of our unit, and the children and I were planning a “trip to the moon.” The children went to the board and chose a place he/she would most likely want to visit (a named crater or sea on the moon) and wrote about it in his/her trip itinerary.

In addition to the ProBoard we practice researching on the internet and watch video clips through United Streaming and various websites like the South Carolina Aquarium who offer virtual tours and video clips. Photostory has proven another fun tool for showing self created videos which can be personalized and tweaked to present specifically the information you want your students to receive at a particular time.

As a learning station I have also had the children reviewing their spelling words on the desktop computer in the back of the classroom and then they practice manipulating the font, size, and color of the text.

I plan in the future to hand over digital cameras to the class for a project on geometry (searching for shapes around the school and in our everyday lives). I hope to create an imovie with their snapshots and video interviews with the children about what they learned through the project. I think video (or at least audio) interviews are a great means of assessment and also a great way to capture memories! Anyways… I am sorry I don’t have more photos right now to show, but again if you are interested in coming to visit my 1st grade class please let me know. Our schedule is very flexible and we’d love to work around your schedule. Just email me and we’ll work something out. I’m in Ms. Nodine’s 1st Grade class at Clemson Elementary. Hope your semesters are going well…they’re almost over!

**BridgetUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-30902612425702110152008-03-18T18:32:00.003-04:002008-03-18T18:48:14.524-04:00InspirationFinding the main idea...

that was the subject for one of my reading lessons last week. What better way to visually dissect the main idea from the details than by using the program Inspiration?

A couple weeks prior to the lesson, I had been piddling around on my cooperating teacher's laptop and discovered that each computer in the classroom has a copy of the program Kidspiration. WOW!

I started playing with this version of my favorite concept map program and found...I like the original version better.

I'm so glad I made this discovery when I did, because when I thought to use Inspiration for my "main idea" lesson weeks later, I knew right away that:
A) I'd better spend more time getting familiar with all the details and different buttons on Kidspiration...or....
B) I'd better download the 30day trial version of Inspiration, the version I'm already familiar with.

I went with option B. This saved me both time and energy (two commodities I had in short supply because I was full-time teaching last week).

The children LOVED Inspiration and asked me if they could play with the program during recess. I had only thought that this program would be perfect to visualize the concept I wanted to get across, but the children's response taught me that I should be enabling the children to make their own discoveries using these tools, not just limiting them to the "discoveries" I WANT them to make.

I keep forgetting that I'm not just limited to teaching other teachers how to use technology. I should really be handing over these tools to my 2nd graders...

and I have the feeling that pretty soon, THEY will be the ones teaching me how to use THEIR programs (Kidspiration).Jessica Campbellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15878082358702451940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-32077808506209440362008-03-10T17:42:00.004-04:002008-12-10T14:13:15.083-05:00WWII CentersI am currently full time teaching, and technology has played a large role in my classroom. We used it on Tuesday to start our unit about the presidents. We talked about where we lived (city, state, country) and I showed them these things on the map. We zoomed in to Dacusville and were able to see the elementary and middle school which they loved! Then we flew to Washington, D.C. to talk about where the president lives. I was able to show them pictures of the White House, Lincoln Memorial, Smithsonian(which we discussed with one of our read-alouds)and many other places in Washington. The students really enjoyed this and did not speak or move from their carpet square during the entire lesson. I think this was a really important thing to do because for many of these students Greenville is the biggest place they have ever been. This allowed them to travel to another place and see sites that they would not usually be able to see. It is also made talking about the president make more since to them because they could relate it to the big white house they saw. I think this lesson went really well and I plan on using google earth again during our St. Partrick's Day themed week to dicuss Ireland.Jessica Hendrixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00872965355462306958noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-18086858607306701252008-02-20T14:58:00.006-05:002008-12-10T14:13:16.234-05:00Our First Lesson

Here are some pictures from our first lesson on Monday! But last week, after my first failed attempt, I decided to try a different approach. Adapt...that's what teachers do, right?

We're still studying the regions of the United States, but this past week's lesson was on the southern region. My cooperating teacher suggested I let the students help me pick the photos for the museum. She suggested I put together a slideshow of photos that would allow me to talk about the characteristics and history of the south, interspersing a few "out of place" photos (to get the students involved). So I put together a Power Point with photos of typical things like fried chicken, kudzu, an old photo of slaves in a cotton field...and then I threw in a photo of the royal palace in Spain, of Thai food, etc; things that didn't belong.

Then as the students and I viewed each picture, one-by-one, we all exclaimed with either a "ding! ding! ding! (if the photo belonged to the southern region) or "boooooooo!" (if it didn't). THEY LOVED THE LESSON!

Interestingly enough, we had really good discussions too.

I would suggest this activity to anyone who wants to put together a virtual museum for younger grades (who knows, maybe even the older grades would enjoy it too).

I'm thinking I'll use the museum of each region when we review for the test at the end of the unit. I'm still marveling, though, over how something less "cool-looking" (a powerpoint slideshow) was more entertaining to the students than the virtual museum. Just comes to show, "ownership" activities are what make the difference, not just the beauty of the presentation.Jessica Campbellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15878082358702451940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-63236345896314532052008-02-13T08:41:00.002-05:002008-02-13T08:46:33.695-05:00Importance of Technology in EducationOne of this semester's projects includes the beginning stages of a project that we will undertake next semester: a movie that demonstrates the importance of using technology in the classroom. This movie will be comprised of several compiled and edited interviews of all levels of people involved in education (students, pre-service teachers, classroom teachers, tech coaches, tech coordinators, principals, district level people) discussing the importance of technology in education.

As a team, we need to come up with some questions that would be useful in the interview process. Please add to this discussion (by adding a comment) and include at least one question that you think might be useful.

Thanks,
RyanRyan Visserhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13146837277050546509noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-79985948269206580122008-02-11T19:44:00.000-05:002008-02-11T19:49:50.280-05:00Technology in KindergartenI am constantly impressed by the kindergarteners in my class and their ability to successfully use the technology. Every morning when I conduct our morning meeting it is done almost completely on the promethian board. It is completely interactive. The students are able to move a mouse to the number of days we have been in school, they are able to choose which counting song they want to hear, move the weather for the day to our chart, play songs to help them in spelling color words, play songs about the days of the week and the months of the year, and count down from ten. I love how smoothly this helps the morning meeting to run and how engaged the students are. I am currently working with my teacher to add in interactive slides that deal with money and time. I think this will be a great way to improve the morning meeting and keep the students involved. I am also working with my teacher to find different ways to use the board during centers. I am excited to experiment with new ideas with this class because they are very interested in using technology.Jessica Hendrixhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00872965355462306958noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-34214874760609669702008-02-11T18:48:00.000-05:002008-02-11T19:03:49.864-05:00Technology in First GradeWell, so far student teaching in first grade has been going really well! I have attempted to bring in some extra technology by using the Promethean Board daily and attempting to let the students use the board more often. My cooperating teacher is completely open to this so I am trying my best to incorporate more and more technology into my daily lessons as I take over more of the day. In a few weeks we are having technology night at our school to educate parents about the technology used in the classroom with their students and about Internet safety at home and school. I will be preparing a Photo Story to display in the classroom as parents come in before the presentation begins. My cooperating teacher is really excited to show this to parents and thinks that they will be very impressed by it. I am looking forward to seeing thier reactions. I am also trying to create a virtual museum for my students to work with during their "Promethean Board Center". So I will let everyone know how it goes and hopefully I will have some pictures to show everyone of my students working with technology.Ashlynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16231297803717243316noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-70618825555732397832008-02-11T00:27:00.000-05:002008-02-11T00:40:56.722-05:00Virtual MuseumsAfter having my socks blown off by how easy and impressive the virtual museums are, I decided to use it with my 2nd graders this week. We are studying the regions of the United States (tied in with tall tales). I figured, "If you can't be there in person, what better way to see New England than to take a virtual tour of it, right?!" I was so pumped...

And then the lesson crashed and burned.

The students were so bored. It really felt like I was taking highschool students through a museum that they had no desire to tour. It didn't matter that there were cool links throughout the powerpoint. It didn't matter that I had spent over an hour looking for interesting photos that captured the essence of New England.

Come to find out, some of my second graders have never even been to a museum in their lives.

Why would they be interested to tour a virtual museum when they have never even seen a been in a real museum before. I'm realizing that 2nd graders need hands-on activities along with photos, but what activities exactly?

I'm not going to give up on using the virtual museums though. Our next region is the southeast. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can help the children take ownership of these museums as we tour them?Jessica Campbellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15878082358702451940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-69226605728502998292008-02-07T17:20:00.000-05:002008-12-10T14:13:16.701-05:00
We have been using technology more and more! It is very different from the second grade class I was in as a practicum student in countless ways. Each grade comes with exciting and unique challenges and rewards.

The use of technology is currently used in the classroom but we are only scratching the surface of the endless possibilities of how to integrate technology into education. For example, the Promethean board serves as a projector instead of an interactive white board. Projects are video taped, and fragments of the tapes are watched. However, my cooperating teacher is open to new ideas. We have brainstormed various ideas. I will let you know more specifics when I know more.

Picture: 2nd Grade lesson using Google EarthElysehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16559841100671570333noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-61078265918838853612007-12-03T00:05:00.000-05:002007-12-03T00:06:46.243-05:00Second Visit to Club 245
November 2, 2007

Today I went to Club 2:45 again and this time I had a very different experience than last time. I was placed in a second grade classroom and I was in there the whole time. There were seven students in the class and I was told before I went in there that they were a wild group. Well that was not an understatement. These kids yelled at each other, threw things, and they would not settle down or listen to their teacher at all. It was very frustrating for me to be in there because I felt like I might be able to do something to help the situation, but at the same time I did not want to be stepping on the toes of the teacher that was already in there. I am hoping that the experience I had in there that was just a class having a bad day, because that classroom was very out of control. I will be asking to go back to the same grade this week so that I can compare this experience to the last one and see if it is a consistent thing, or something that goes on all the time. I will be curious to go back see what it is like next time.
Kaitiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07204720844795958754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-432490833245995087.post-74751111096044254032007-12-03T00:02:00.000-05:002007-12-03T00:05:40.977-05:00First Visit to Club 245
October 19, 2007

I was a little nervous before I went into Club 2:45 the first time. I was disappointed to get there and find out that I was asked to work in the office the whole first day I was there.
